Losing your car keys can be stressful, but here at AutoLocks we do everything we can to get you back into your vehicle and on the road as quickly as possible. If you’ve lost your car keys, here’s what you should do:
Note the make and model of your vehicle, as well as it’s registration number
Ensure you know the current location of the car (post code is usually sufficient)
Call AutoLocks and arrange a convenient appointment
Telephone your insurance provider and see if key protection is covered in your policy
If your keys have been stolen, request a priority appointment and follow these additional steps below:
Ensure your car cannot be moved by fitting a clamp, a wheel lock or by blocking it in with other vehicles
Remove a fuse or relay from under the bonnet if you have access
Call the police and report your car keys as stolen
We often get worried customers contacting us about ‘lost’ keys that are found a few minutes later. Before calling us for car locksmith services, please ensure that you’ve looked everywhere you can possibly imagine your key might be – it saves both our time and yours!
Most people are under the impression that car keys can only be replaced by the vehicle manufacturer. Fortunately this is not the case, as usually, this option is both expensive and time consuming.
Once you’ve arranged an appointment with AutoLocks, one of our expertly trained technicians will meet you at your location, armed with the latest auto locksmith equipment and blank keys. After gaining entry to your vehicle (damage-free, of course!) the technician will examine the existing lock and create a new key.
Vehicles made in Europe after 1995 should be fitted with an immobiliser, combined with a transponder chip inside the key itself for added security. Once new keys have been created by the AutoLocks technician, they will use sophisticated diagnostic tools to remove the existing immobiliser codes. They will then pair the new keys and transponder units to the ECU (engine control unit) in your vehicle, meaning that you can carry on your day as you had originally planned.
