The automotive industry is composed of a broad range of businesses and organisations involved in the concept design, development, manufacture, marketing and sale of motor vehicles. It is one of the largest revenue-based economic sectors in the world. The UK automotive industry is a important part of the UK’s economy with a turnover of more than £82 billion and an added value of £18.6 billion to the UK economy. With some 168,000 people employed directly in manufacturing and more than 823,000 employed across the wider automotive industry, they account for 14.4 per cent of UK total exports of goods, worth 44 billion euro, and each year they invest 3.75 billion euro in automotive R&D. More than 30 manufacturers build more than 70 vehicle models in the UK supported by 2,500 component suppliers and some of the world’s most skilled engineers. Over 1.3 million cars, 78,270 commercial vehicles and 2.5 million engines were built in the United Kingdom in 2019.
